South Florida’s beaches have become some of the most preferable nesting grounds for sea turtles. Nesting season, which typically runs from May through October, is coming to a peak this month. The Loggerhead Marine Life Center, located in Juno Beach, monitors a 9.5 mile stretch of beach along the Atlantic Ocean where Loggerhead, Leatherback, and Green sea turtles lay their eggs. The center is an “education and ocean conservation facility” dedicated to protecting, researching, and rehabilitating threatened and endangered sea turtles.
Loggerhead has established a unique ‘Turtle Walk’ program that allows visitors to learn about and observe the egg-laying process of sea turtles. Scouts will survey Juno Beach in search of a sea turtle ready to nest while you watch an informative presentation and observe current patients in the Sea Turtle Hospital. The Loggerhead Marine Life Center has also established a ‘Hatchling Release’ summer program for visitors to view the release of previously struggling sea turtle hatchlings back into the ocean. The informative presentation and after-hours experience to view the current turtle patients in the hospital are also incorporated. This program starts August 1st and runs through the 25th. However, you do not have to register for a summer program to experience all Loggerhead Marine Life Center has to offer. The center offers kid-friendly interactive, educational models about the various types of sea turtles. Walk outside to observe the injured sea turtles in their tanks and talk to staff members to learn more about each one. You may also see the Turtle Clinic through the windows.
